Bayern win, Dortmund in dropzone

Post by sake »

A review of the weekend's action in Germany's Bundesliga, as defeat to Bayern leaves Dortmund in bottom three.

Bayern Munich restored their four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday and left Borussia Dortmund in the bottom three with a 2-1 win over their rivals at the Allianz Arena.

Marco Reus gave Dortmund the lead in the first half, but Robert Lewandowski broke their resistance before Arjen Robben sealed victory from the penalty spot.

Dortmund's seventh defeat of the season - the same number as the whole of last season - leaves Jurgen Klopp's men in 16th place, and it could get even worse on Sunday when bottom-placed Freiburg have the chance to move above them.

On Sunday, Borussia Monchengladbach ended Hoffenheim's unbeaten record in in the Bundesliga as they moved into a share of second with Wolfsburg thanks to a 3-1 win.

Andre Hahn gave the Foals the lead and Antonio Modeste's reply was cancelled out by Patrick Herrmann's brace as Lucien Favre's men moved back to within four points of leaders Bayern.

Hamburg stunned high-flying Bayer Leverkusen to pick up a rare win and move out of the bottom three on Saturday.

Rafael van der Vaart scored the only goal of a fiery encounter midway through the first half to earn Josef Zinnbauer's men only their second win of the season.

Leverkusen were unable to find an equaliser as Hamburg held on for a 1-0 success at the HSV-Arena - and a precious three points in their battle against the drop.

Wolfsburg kept up the pressure on leaders Bayern with an impressive 4-0 win at Stuttgart.

Ivan Perisic struck twice with Robin Knoche and Kevin De Bruyne also on target as some sloppy defending by the hosts invited the Wolves to take all three points.

Werder Bremen picked up their first Bundesliga win of the season on Viktor Skripnik's league debut as coach, coming from behind to beat Mainz 2-1.

Shinji Okazaki gave the hosts an early lead but Bremen refused to hoist the white flag so soon and fought their way back into the game, Franco Di Santo bringing them level just before half-time.

Di Santo struck again early in the second half for a priceless goal for Bremen, sealing their first Bundesliga win of the season and, considering also their win in the DFB-Pokal in midweek, making it two wins from two for Skripnik since he replaced Robin Dutt.

Hannover needed a late own goal from Alexander Madlung to see off Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 at the Niedersachsenstadion.

Despite dominating possession from the outset, Hannover were unable to make their domination count.

Jimmy Briand was unfortunate to see his goal disallowed in the first half, but it did not matter in the end as Madlung obliged with an own-goal which gifted the Reds their second straight 1-0 win.

Schalke rode their luck to pick up three precious points against Augsburg on Friday night, moving above their guests into seventh place.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored the only goal of the game against the run of play in the 37th minute with the Royal Blues struggling to create chances from start to finish.

Augsburg showed more attacking intent, but were unable to make the breakthrough at the Arena Auf Schalke.
