It is not simple, thing is that often devices have different voltage levels and one often needs to have some TTL between the Tx and Rx pins of PC and the device/target. Always check the voltage level the IC/device/target uses. It would be a good investment to buy a USB to serial connector if you need to connect device(s) with PC frequently
