Tricolor TV tackles piracy

Post by Umair Malik »

Russia’s leading pay-TV operator Tricolor TV has intensified its fight against piracy.

According to Kommersant, it blocked over 1,070 internet sites illegally distributing cable channels in 2016.

This was 32% more than a year earlier. Tricolor TV also initiated 15 criminal cases in Russia and Belarus, up from 12 in 2015, with seven resulting in criminal convictions.

In total, law enforcers seized over 130 units of pirated equipment.

Other pay-TV operators in Russia are also fighting with piracy. In the case of Orion, which includes Orion Express and Telekarta, it has addressed the problem by using two complementary encryption systems.

Although card sharing is seen as a major issue, it is believed that illegal connections in the B2B segment are also contributing to the problem.
