DD Free Dish to roll out MPEG-4 Set-Top Boxes frm April 2016

Post by FARRUKH »

Doordarshan’s free direct-to-home (DTH) service Free Dish plans to roll out its MPEG-4 set-top boxes (STBs) from April 2016 onwards.

The MPEG-4 STBs will be priced upwards of Rs 1,000. All FTA MPEG-4 STBs will receive MPEG-2 channels as they will be unencrypted.

Unlike the MPEG-2 STBs, the MPEG-4 STBs can be procured only from authorised dealers.

DD Free Dish will increase the channel count from 64 to 112 with MPEG-4 technology and will use Bangalore based ByDesign India’s conditional access system (CAS) to encrypt the MPEG-4 channels.

DD Free Dish will switch over to MPEG-4 from the current MPEG-2 in two phases. The first phase may begin by early next month.
