Celtic cut gap to Aberdeen

Post by sake »

A review of Saturday's action in the Scottish Premiership.

Aberdeen saw their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership reduced to just two points, but were in the end thankful for Ryan Jack's late leveller to draw 3-3 against Dundee.

The Dons had looked comfortable after David Goodwillie's early strike put them in front, but goals from Gary Irvine and Greg Stewart had Dundee ahead by half-time. Gary Harkins added a third soon after the interval to put daylight between the sides.

Aberdeen were handed a late lifeline through a Jonny Hayes penalty, and Jack sealed a share of the points when he bundled home deep in injury-time to rescue a point.

Celtic kept the pressure on Aberdeen earlier in the day with a comfortable 2-0 win over Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

In front of a record crowd at the stadium of 6,007, Ronny Deila's side bossed the first-half with right-back Adam Matthews giving them the interval advantage in the 33rd minute with a terrific strike from 16 yards.

The visitors, back from a winter break in Gran Canaria, played with an assurance for the most part and, when midfielder Liam Henderson made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half with a drive, the points were effectively safe.

St Johnstone strengthened their position inside the top six after a goal at the start of each half earned them a 2-0 win over Partick Thistle at McDiarmid Park.

Captain Dave Mackay gave Tommy Wright's side a fourth-minute lead with a deflected effort and fellow defender Steven Anderson headed home in the 49th minute to seal the home side's seventh win in nine matches.

Stephen Mallan headed home a late winner for 10-man St Mirren at Ross County to move the Paisley side off the foot of the table with a 2-1 victory.

Sean Kelly gave Saints an early lead but they suffered a setback when Yoann Arquin, making his debut against his former club, was red-carded eight minutes before the break.

Substitute Liam Boyce looked to have rescued a point for County when he headed home with eight minutes to go but, against the odds, Mallan grabbed a vital second goal for the visitors.

There were two Scottish Premiership matches postponed as Dundee United v Inverness and Motherwell v Kilmarnock fell victim to the weather.
