We go to France for an e-mail from Alan Anderson: 'Hello Nick and I just thought I'd see what's happening back in Blighty with the news here in France that Salomon Kalou is being lined up by Spurs - I have to say it's a surprising one on a number of levels. Despite pretty much all of the Ligue 1 sides (except PSG and AS Monaco) being open to offers for players this one seems slightly odd. Kalou hasn't be particularly at the top of his game for Lille despite them sitting third in the table (I saw him against Bordeaux last November and he was pretty ineffective and subbed after an hour). He's only scored 6 times and 2 of those were penalties (do Spurs need a new penalty-taker??). He's playing as an out-and-out central striker rather than the more left-sided role he played at Chelsea but he'd hardly be a marquee signing down at the Lane and seems that Lille despite be well-placed/aiming for CL (or Europa as a worst-case) are bothered about keeping him.'

To appease the faithful I pose the following to Chelsea: Consider loaning Mata to Liverpool before you sell him to United! I would argue this increase the chance of Liverpool taking points off Arsenal and City as much as it would United increasing your title chances! The schedule and Man U's position helps them with negotiations with Chelsea since they do not have to play each other again but would Mata want to go to Man U at this point in time and not play in Europe next year? Well I guess it is better than not playing at all. Would it involve Rooney eventually going the other way? Of course Liverpool would add an option to buy Mata in the summer, which they would trigger if they made Champions League.'

An excellent post earlier on from Simon Somerville but here is a slight amendment: 'Sorry I made an error! Boston debt repayment is not $151m a year. Hello to Simon Somerville: 'Just wanted to weigh in on the Billionaire money talk! Paul if you are comparing Baseball to the EPL as an example of Billionaires throwing money at a team consider the following: Liverpool has a relatively small stadium and had a gate receipt of £42m in 2012 as well as the 5th highest payroll of 119m almost 3 times that of the gate. They made a loss of £41m in 2012. Boston had the 4th highest payroll last year at around $150m (8 players make up $100m of this) this was nearly $80m less than the New York Yankees who have a massive stadium and generate huge revenue. Big numbers! However they play 162 games a year 81 home games which means $833,333 per game. Boston has a small ground circa 37,400. The average attendance for home games is 34979 total attendance for the year 2,833,333 the average ticket was $53.38 which means gate receipts of $151,243,315. Obviously there are cost associated with running the stadium (gate receipts go towards debt repayment) and huge costs moving a baseball team around the country for 81 games and spring training but we have not even factored in concessions, TV revenue or Sponsorship deals and revenue generated from the Playoffs. Overall they generated $336m in revenue last year and there player expenses were $190 (includes benefits and bonuses).'

Hello to Colin: 'I don't know what the fuss is all about over the Mata fee. Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool have all paid over the odds for players over the past few years so why not United. It will take more than one purchase to solve the problems at Man U but the significance of no RVP and Rooney is huge. If these two were in the line up last night, United would be going to Wembley. Anyway it is what it is and Machester will need teams to come back to them while getting some traction and putting a winning streak together. It's a very competitive league and all the top teams will drop points especially as some progress in the CL and I expect most of to them to move on in the next round, including United.

Ken Livermore: 'Looks like the next signing for Chelsea, or Spurs is going to be the Brazilian Romulu. The asking price is 10 million, and exactly on trend, Liverpool have offered 8 million. So whilst we haggle over the difference you can expect one of the London teams to nip in and sign him.'

Brendan Rodgers insists any January signing has to be able to make an immediate contribution - He also talks about Mohamed Salah.
10:58
Noel Madden says: 'Oh how the Liverpool fans laughed when Willian snubbed Spurs to join Chelsea, now they know how it feels (even though I don't rate him). Not sure how Jay reckons Chelsea didn't need Willian. He has been one of their key players for the last couple of months. I also think the theory of Chelsea signing players simply to prevent rivals strengthening has been well and truly blown out of the water by their willingness to sell Mata to United. On a separate note; Vertonghen, Paulinho, Kaboul and Sandro came back from injury in a friendly game yesterday. All 4 have been absent from our run of 16 points from 18. Will any other squad improve as much in January?'
10:55
Kumar writes: 'I agree with Mr. Anderson. Ferguson would never stoop to the level of acquiring a rival's world class bench warmer. He would only stoop to the level of spending a record fee on a player who stands in the center circle looking completely disinterested in the match just to force a move to United.'
10:50
Alan Anderson: 'Morning Matthew and just a couple of things from over here in France. Firstly the on-off transfer of Yohan Cabaye to PSG from Newcastle is in danger it seems as with Paul Pogba likely to join PSG in the summer it'll leave too few midfield places available and rumour is that's putting Cabaye off the move (apparently he's also still happy at Newcastle). Also my view on the Juan Mata news for what it's worth: since when did Man U (obviously) take cast-offs from their main rivals? Is this a whole new level of ignominy? I can't ever imagine that SAF would have stooped to accept a rival's 'bench-warmer' regardless of the fee involved.' I wouldn't class Juan Mata as your average 'bench-warmer'.'
