Why do some videos look blurry after uploading?

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed something with video uploads that I’m trying to understand. A video can look sharp and clear on my computer, but after uploading it to a website or social platform, it sometimes looks noticeably softer or more compressed.

I’m guessing it could be related to resolution, bitrate, codec, or the platform re-encoding the video.

What settings do you normally use before uploading?

For example, do you export at 1080p with a particular bitrate, or do you upload a higher-resolution version and let the platform handle the conversion?

Also, does changing MP4/WebM or H.264/H.265 make much difference in your experience?

I’d be interested to hear what settings have worked reliably for you and whether you’ve found a good way to keep text and fine details sharp after upload.

Yeah, this usually happens because the platform re-encodes the video after upload. Resolution and bitrate matter, but the platform’s compression can still soften the final result. H.264 with a good bitrate is usually a safe choice.

That makes sense. I’ve noticed the same thing, especially with videos that contain small text or fine details. Even when the original file looks sharp, the platform’s re-encoding can make those areas noticeably softer.

H.264 does seem like a reliable option for compatibility. I’m also starting to think that uploading a clean, slightly higher-quality source can help give the platform more information to work with, although it obviously can’t prevent compression entirely.
